I did not have the resources to buy really nice straight graded coins until about 10 years ago when I started to upgrade some of my earlier purchases of the more common die marriages (DMs). The philosophy of my collecting CBHDs was that I wanted to get as many DMs as possible as quickly as possible. If I found a coin with obvious problems, like being cleaned or hair lined, and it was listed as a R-4 coin or rarer, I would purchase the piece if the problem was not extreme with the intention of upgrading at a later date. The CBHDs collection peaked at 445 die marriages and at that point I realized that I was not getting any younger and nobody in my family has any interest in my collection.

In late October of 2023 I sent off all of my raw CBHDs to PCGS for grading and encapsulation. The last group was received in the first week of January of this year and it surprised me. Some of the coins that I had graded came back with details grading and some of the coins that had problems that would eliminate them from a straight grade came back straight graded. Of the 18 remaining coins, all of them are R-4+ or higher rarities, which means that there are fewer than 120 or less known of these DMs. Twelve have been details graded and I have included the pedigree of all of the coins, if known.

The coins are being sold on a first come first served basis and any reasonable offers will be considered. If an offer is submitted and I accept or counter offer, you have 24 hours to decide on the counter offer. All coins are being sold as is and no returns will be accepted. If you want an opinion about something on a coin or a condition that the photos do not show clearly, I will do my best to explain what I see but please remember that I am not a professional grader. The buyer is responsible for the shipping costs and I only ship via USPS 3-day Priority with signature required for about $17.00 or USPS Registered Mail for about $28.00 and which way to ship is your decision.

Please send any offers or questions to me at jazonca(at)att.net

Thanks for taking the time to look over the list; Take Care and Be Safe,

Jerry Zonca BHNC #150 and JRCS #1037
Editor, JR Newsletterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17488919916951215644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5563493711656998987.post-86881342992554676312024-01-21T16:59:00.003-05:002024-01-21T16:59:44.338-05:00JR Newsletter: 21 January 2024 (616)
Brad Karoleff wrote:

The next JRCS zoom meeting is Wednesday February 21st at 7PM EDT.

We need a volunteer for a presentation.

Thanks,

Brad

bkaroleff(at)yahoo.com

--

Gary Rosner wrote:

<p class="yiv0825085065msonormal" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">Here is a nice-looking half dollar I put into my coin collection today. The late Don Frederick displayed it from his personal collection during the 1991 100thAnniversary ANA “World’s Fair of Money” at the Rosemont O’Hare Convention Center (Chicago area). Don was a knowledgeable collector-dealer best known in Bust Halves circles. After some haggling, I was able to acquire the coin from Don via a private transaction. It became a very important addition to a growing Capped Bust Half Dimes collection during my peak years of collecting the series. In 1994 I passed it on to Glenn Peterson as part of a three-way deal with Russ Logan. Hopefully it would now pass on to a new owner who will come to appreciate it as much as I did while it remained in my personal collection for several years.
Editor, JR Newsletterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17488919916951215644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5563493711656998987.post-29112132819949582172023-12-10T00:12:00.000-05:002023-12-10T00:12:08.592-05:00JR Newsletter: 10 December 2023 (614)
Steve Herrman wrote:

The new December 2023 revision of Auction Prices Realized for Early Silver Dollars 1794-1803, Number 5, is now available. As I’m sure all you remember I called for a jumbo issue of the journal for our 100th issue. The membership responded very positively granting me with almost a full double issue. With that came extra work that is almost done. The issue will be out in early December.

<div dir="ltr" style="caret-color: rgb(29, 34, 40); color: #1d2228; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; outline: currentcolor !important;">

<div dir="ltr" style="caret-color: rgb(29, 34, 40); color: #1d2228; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; outline: currentcolor !important;">It also came with additional un planned for circumstances. In my enthusiasm to put out a special issue I semi-planned for additional printing costs but did not think about needing different envelopes and the additional postage needed to mail them. In discussion with our esteemed treasurer we determined that it would be prudent to raise $3000 to keep the treasury in a healthy condition.

<div dir="ltr" style="caret-color: rgb(29, 34, 40); color: #1d2228; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; outline: currentcolor !important;">

<div dir="ltr" style="caret-color: rgb(29, 34, 40); color: #1d2228; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; outline: currentcolor !important;">So, here I am with hat in hand asking the membership to consider donating to the cause. I have already received commitments from a few members for a $100 donation. If you could see to sending something it would be highly appreciated. Checks should be made out to JRCS and please send a note with it letting Dave know it is a journal donation. Send them to JRCS, PO Box 3039 Centennial CO 80161.

<div dir="ltr" style="caret-color: rgb(29, 34, 40); color: #1d2228; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; outline: currentcolor !important;">

<div dir="ltr" style="caret-color: rgb(29, 34, 40); color: #1d2228; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; outline: currentcolor !important;">We also have had two members who have downsized their numismatic library and donated their JRJ’s to the society. I can add recent numbers to make virtually complete sets. These are being offered for $500 plus UPS shipping to the first two respondents to bkaroleff(at)yahoo.com.
