JR Newsletter: 6 January 2019 (427)

We have a number of interesting contributions this week.  The first is from Glenn Peterson and will be of particular interest to those attending the FUN Show:

Dear members and guests,

I would like to invite everyone to meetings at the FUN show in Orlando:

- JRCS general meeting Friday Jan 11 at 8:30 AM in room W303A. David Finkelstein will share more of his excellent original research on the early US Mint. He will report on discrepancies in the Mint’s account with Richard Vaughn, a major depositor at the time. He will have some perplexing reports from his research. Please come to hear this interesting presentation.

- BHNC general meeting Friday Jan 11 at 9:45 AM in the same room (W303A).  Come hear Glenn Peterson give keys to attributing the most difficult year for capped bust halves, 1827.  Sharpen your attribution skills!

I look forward to seeing everyone in Florida

From Jim Rosen and Richard Meaney:

Nearly 40 years ago, a young John McCloskey was corresponding with a young Jim Rosen on attribution of capped bust half dimes by Valentine number.  John was kind enough to create a type-written cover sheet with some hand-drawn images depicting his method of attribution.  John also provided attribution guidelines for the 77 die marriages he had at the time.  Jim was wise enough to save the cover sheet and the 77 individual sheets of paper that John sent to him...all in pristine condition.

Jim Rosen mailed to Richard Meaney the 77 attribution sheets and the personally-typewritten and hand-drawn cover page created by John McCloskey.  Richard has scanned these items and provided links here so that each of you may take a glimpse into how numismatic correspondence and long-distance mentorship and education was done in 1981!

JRCS membership dues checks and ballots for the Jules Reiver award have been arriving at my P.O. Box  for a week or two now.  Thanks to all who have sent them in so far.  If you are attending FUN you are welcome to drop off your dues check and / or Reiver award ballot at my tables 535 and 634.

You are also welcome to look over my six cases with a heavy emphasis on early silver coins.
Happy New Year to all.  Hope to see you in Orlando.

Finally, a reminder about the JRCS Half Dime Census:

The officers of the JRCS are soliciting your half dime inventory information for inclusion in the Spring 2019 issue of the John Reich Journal.

Please email your complete inventory listing, including all duplicates, of all your 1792, Draped Bust, Flowing Hair and Capped Bust half dimes to me.  Any format that my iMac computer can read will work, so most spreadsheets and word processing files will be fine.  Even if you have a written list, you can take a picture of that written list and email it to me if you would like.  Please make the subject line of your email “Half Dime Census” and include your name and JRCS number.

My email address is: richard.meaney(at)yahoo.com

If you prefer, you may mail paper copies to me here:

Please include the following information to the best of your ability:

  • Grade of each coin.  Grading company info (NGC, ANACS, CAC, PCGS, raw) is not needed.
  • Die Marriage or remarriage for each coin
  • Cud information for your coins with known cuds.  For example, if you report an 1830 LM-5 half dime in VF-20, I will assume the coin does not have a cud.  If you have one with a cud, something like “1830 LM-5 VF20 cud” will suffice.
  • If you would like to participate, but wish for your contribution to remain anonymous, just let me know.

Please respond no later than March 7, 2019 to ensure inclusion of your collection in this census. This is a hard cut-off date.  Questions? Let me know!
