The 1832 LM-9.1 Capped Bust Half Dime being offered in David Perkins' January 2024 SB Half Dime Sale as Lot 2407 is an old friend of mine. The late Don Frederick displayed it from his personal collection during the 1991 100^thAnniversary ANA “World’s Fair of Money” at the Rosemont O’Hare Convention Center (Chicago area). Don was a knowledgeable collector-dealer best known in Bust Halves circles. After some haggling, I was able to acquire the coin from Don via a private transaction. It became a very important addition to a growing Capped Bust Half Dimes collection during my peak years of collecting the series. In 1994 I passed it on to Glenn Peterson as part of a three-way deal with Russ Logan. Hopefully it would now pass on to a new owner who will come to appreciate it as much as I did while it remained in my personal collection for several years.

A fixed price offering will be held by mail starting December 15^th.  A priced catalog will be send at this time.

 

The Sealed Bid Sale will close Thursday January 4^th at 6PM EST.  Those on our Capped Bust half dime distribution list will receive preliminary catalogs this weekend.

The latest issue, our 100^th!, is back from the printer and being mailed in the next couple days.

 

If anyone does not receive theirs by the 20th please let me know at bkaroleff(at)yahoo.com and I will send out a replacement.  

 

As you will see this is a 72-page issue.  The membership has stepped up to my request to make the 100^thissue something special.   With that came extra expenses in printing, postage and envelopes.  You will find a request in with the journal for donations to help defray the expense of this double issue.  You will also find a dues notice for next year if you are an annual member.  Please forward your check to David as soon as possible to make his bookkeeping responsibilities easier.  You will also find the voting ballot for this years’ Jules Reiver Literary Award.  Please vote for up to 3 articles and return your ballot to David with your dues check.

 

I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming FUN convention in Orlando.  The JRCS meeting will feature a presentation by Chris Pilliod and David Finkelstein on the 1795 plug dollars.  I am especially looking forward to seeing what these two sleuths have uncovered this time!

 

Now, Dasher now Dancer now Prancer and Vixen.  On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen.  To the top of the aisle to the top of the case now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!  As the cherries are scattered before the wild hurricane fly when they meet with a buyer into the collection they go!  With a sleigh full of NEWPS and a wallet as empty as snow each of us run to catalog the coins anew.  And away the collectors all flew like the down of a thistle and I heard them say Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night!

2024 FUN Show JRCS Presentation: "A Fresh Look at the 1795 Silver Plug Dollar" by Christopher Pilliod and David Finkelstein.

   Based on preliminary evidence, the long-held theories about why a silver plug was added to a number of 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollars may be wrong. A third potential reason under study will be shared with the club at FUN 2024.  Details TBA (check the FUN Show program).

As the holidays race towards us there are a few things going on in the world of JRCS. As I’m sure all you remember I called for a jumbo issue of the journal for our 100th issue. The membership responded very positively granting me with almost a full double issue. With that came extra work that is almost done. The issue will be out in early December. 

It also came with additional un planned for circumstances. In my enthusiasm to put out a special issue I semi-planned for additional printing costs but did not think about needing different envelopes and the additional postage needed to mail them.  In discussion with our esteemed treasurer we determined that it would be prudent to raise $3000 to keep the treasury in a healthy condition. 

So, here I am with hat in hand asking the membership to consider donating to the cause. I have already received commitments from a few members for a $100 donation. If you could see to sending something it would be highly appreciated. Checks should be made out to JRCS and please send a note with it letting Dave know it is a journal donation. Send them to JRCS, PO Box 3039 Centennial CO 80161. 

We also have had two members who have downsized their numismatic library and donated their JRJ’s to the society. I can add recent numbers to make virtually complete sets. These are being offered for $500 plus UPS shipping to the first two respondents to bkaroleff(at)yahoo.com. All the early issues are present and represent a good value for anyone wanting a set of our journals. 

Thanks to everyone who helps with a donation to our society. Any monies collected over the requested amount will be held in the treasury to offset miscellaneous future expenses.

FINAL CALL:  DIME CENSUS 

SUBMISSIONS DUE BY Friday, September, 15^th

This is the FINAL CALL for SUBMISSIONS to the 2023 Dime Census.

 

My deadline for submissions is Friday, September 15^th as I must assemble the content and write the supporting article that weekend ahead of extended business travel.   I cannot promise that any submission after Sept. 15^th will be included in the 2023 census.

 

Thus far, I have 9 – Draped Bust and 15 – Capped Bust submissions to the census.   I am pleased to report that 100% of the contributors have provided detailed information (Grading Service, CAC, Raw, Details, etc.) to enable a color coding of the census.   This is a “next generation” trial approach to leverage our color printed journal.

 

Past Contributors who Contacted me, but Lacking Submission:  LM56, 950, 1039, 1057, and a few others.

 

Past Contributors I’ve Not Heard from Yet:  LM13, 48, 70, 114, 855, 1006, 1068, 1212, 1300, 1452, 1490, and 1521.   If you contact me with your email and JRCS number, I will send you a pre-populated template of information to update and correct.   This will make the process quite simple for everyone.

 

PLUS – There May be More of You Out There …….. Please email me and I will send you a template to complete for submission.
