We have contributions this week from David Perkins and Brad
Karoleff. First, of interest to those
who collect half dimes, a message from David Perkins.

Extraordinary
Collection of Capped Bust Half Dimes 1829-1837 by Die Marriage and Die State to
be Offered for Sale in January and August 2014
As announced previously, I will be offering for sale a very nice and large collection of Capped Bust Half Dimes 1829-1837 by die marriage, beginning with Part I of the sale being held at the Orlando FUN Show in January 2014. The second part of this sale is planned for the 2014 ANA Convention in August.
The collection
has a total of 90 die marriages and 25 remarriages, and many coins are in
unique and late die states, including a number of coins with cuds. Much
of the collection has been off the market for 20-30 years.
There are
numerous Condition Census specimens, Plate Coins from Federal Half Dimes
1792-1837 by Russell Logan & John McCloskey, and coins with important
pedigrees. In addition, there are a couple of late die state early half
dimes (1795 Flowing Hair and an 1800 Draped Bust) and nine Seated Half Dimes
included in the sale.
The majority of
the collection has been graded by PCGS. Most of the specimens are graded
in the range of PCGS EF45 to MS63, with an overall average grade of
approximately AU50.
Part I will
consist of both sealed bid auction lots and coins offered at fixed prices. The Part I Sealed Bid Sale Auction lots will
be available for viewing and the Fixed Price lots for purchase at Table #
1533 at the 2014 FUN Convention. The table
will be listed in the FUN Convention Program under “W. David Perkins, Numismatist.”
Lot viewing will be available starting with dealer setup on Wednesday, January 8,
2014. The Fixed Price lots
will be offered for sale at FUN starting on Thursday, January 9, 2014, when the show is open to the public.
Following is a table of dates, die marriages, rarity estimates and grades that will be in Part I of
the sale at FUN, as it stands today. A listing with more detailed
descriptions and terms of the sale should be sent by e-mail in the next 10 days
or so to those collectors and dealers who have previously requested it. I
expect to delineate those coins headed for the sealed bid auction from those
headed for the fixed price portion of the sale with the next announcement. If you have not already requested the list
and sale details, are unsure if you did or would like a copy please let me know
via e-mail at wdperki(at)attglobal.net
In general, the rarer die marriages and die
states and Logan-McCloskey plate coins will be in the Sealed Bid Auction Sale
and the balance of the collection will be offered at fixed prices. The chart below will be updated with
designations for cuds and plate coin status with the next announcement.

The latest issue of The John Reich Journal went out in the mail on the December 12th. Anyone who has not received their issue in a couple of weeks should contact me at bkaroleff(at)yahoo.com to get a substitute copy.
In
this issue of the journal the schedule for our meeting at FUN on Friday
morning is listed. David Finkelstein will be talking about the Yellow
Fever epidemics that plagued the Philadelphia area during the early
years of the Mint. Later that day at the BHNC meeting, Dr. Glenn
Peterson will give a presentation on multiple struck Bust Halves. We
hope to see many of you there.
Also, I would like to thank all the members who contacted me about my book sale from last week's issue. I still have a few books left that can be delivered via Priority mail in time for the holidays.
