JR Newsletter: 29 December 2013 (172)

Our last newsletter of 2013 has a few submissions on various topics.  First, Brad Karoleff wrote:

I am working on an article and need the help of the membership in locating a few coins to illustrate my article.

Does anyone here own or know where I can find the following items for illustrations?  Full credit will be given to anyone helping me with the project, if you want to be identified.

I have a couple off center strike bust halves, but would like a better one to illustrate my article.  I am interested, not only in obverse and reverse photos, but the edge also, which is the focus of my article.  Can anyone supply a coin to be photographed, or the photos I need?  I am looking either for the following coins from the Logan sale or coins similar to these.  Of particular interest are the double struck "in collar" coins as I do not have any of them in my collection.

Logan Lot numbers; 2237, 2292, 2334, 2344, 2359, 2385, 2418.

There are other denomination error coins that I am also looking for from the Logan sale.  They are:

1818 Off center strike bust quarter lot 1849, or another like it.
1814 Off center strike bust dime lot 2015, or another like it.
1827 JR4 dime double struck lot 2065, or another like it.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Next, in preparation for the EAC-JRCS Convention, Nathan Markowitz wrote:

Now that our holiday season is drawing to a close I would like to again invite potential speakers to give a presentation at the 2014 EAC convention in Colorado Springs.  Topics can include early copper, early silver, literature or related history.  Your passion and willingness to share with an eager audience is the only absolute requirement, so let's hear from some new folks.  I need to get a schedule into Pennywise and will also need details for the program for the May 1-4 convention.  Thanks...I look forward to hearing from you at cascades1787(at)yahoo.com

Articles on early silver Numismatic Literature in latest issue of The Asylum

For those JR News readers who are not a member of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society (NBS), I’d like to point out that there are two good articles pertaining to early U.S. silver Numismatic Literature in the latest issue of The Asylum, the quarterly Journal of the NBS.

The first article is by Brad Karoleff and is titled, “Limited-Edition Silver Coin References:  The Connoisseur’s Library Updated.”  This article covers the deluxe editions of early silver references, half dimes to silver dollars, issued since and including the Haseltine Type Table sale catalog.  Price ranges are given for deluxe editions from each series.

The second article is by Len Augsburger, and is titled, “Numismatic Literature for the Liberty Seated Half Dime Collector.”  Steve Crain contributed to the section on the Valentine half dime book.

I am a former Treasurer of NBS, and am currently on the NBS Board of Governors.  I recommend NBS membership to anyone with an interest in research and Numismatic Literature.  Here is a link to the NBS website for those wishing to learn more or join NBS:  http://www.coinbooks.com/  The website has an online index of articles by subject and author.  Four issues of The Asylum are published per year.

JR Newsletter: 15 December 2013 (170)

We have contributions this week from David Perkins and Brad Karoleff.  First, of interest to those who collect half dimes, a message from David Perkins.

David Perkins wrote:

Extraordinary Collection of Capped Bust Half Dimes 1829-1837 by Die Marriage and Die State to be Offered for Sale in January and August 2014

As announced previously, I will be offering for sale a very nice and large collection of Capped Bust Half Dimes 1829-1837 by die marriage, beginning with Part I of the sale being held at the Orlando
FUN Show in January 2014.  The second part of this sale is planned for the 2014 ANA Convention in August.

The collection has a total of 90 die marriages and 25 remarriages, and many coins are in unique and late die states, including a number of coins with cuds.  Much of the collection has been off the market for 20-30 years.

There are numerous Condition Census specimens, Plate Coins from Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837 by Russell Logan & John McCloskey, and coins with important pedigrees.  In addition, there are a couple of late die state early half dimes (1795 Flowing Hair and an 1800 Draped Bust) and nine Seated Half Dimes included in the sale.

The majority of the collection has been graded by PCGS.  Most of the specimens are graded in the range of PCGS EF45 to MS63, with an overall average grade of approximately AU50.

Part I will consist of both sealed bid auction lots and coins offered at fixed prices.  The Part I Sealed Bid Sale Auction lots will be available for viewing and the Fixed Price lots for purchase at Table # 1533 at the 2014 FUN Convention. The table will be listed in the FUN Convention Program under “W. David Perkins, Numismatist.”  Lot viewing will be available starting with dealer setup on Wednesday, January 8, 2014.  The Fixed Price lots will be offered for sale at FUN starting on Thursday, January 9, 2014, when the show is open to the public.

Following is a table of dates, die marriages, rarity estimates and grades that will be in Part I of the sale at FUN, as it stands today.  A listing with more detailed descriptions and terms of the sale should be sent by e-mail in the next 10 days or so to those collectors and dealers who have previously requested it.  I expect to delineate those coins headed for the sealed bid auction from those headed for the fixed price portion of the sale with the next announcement.  If you have not already requested the list and sale details, are unsure if you did or would like a copy please let me know via e-mail at wdperki(at)attglobal.net

In general, the rarer die marriages and die states and Logan-McCloskey plate coins will be in the Sealed Bid Auction Sale and the balance of the collection will be offered at fixed prices.  The chart below will be updated with designations for cuds and plate coin status with the next announcement.
