The 1832 LM-9.1 Capped Bust Half Dime being offered in David Perkins' January 2024 SB Half Dime Sale as Lot 2407 is an old friend of mine. The late Don Frederick displayed it from his personal collection during the 1991 100thAnniversary ANA “World’s Fair of Money” at the Rosemont O’Hare Convention Center (Chicago area). Don was a knowledgeable collector-dealer best known in Bust Halves circles. After some haggling, I was able to acquire the coin from Don via a private transaction. It became a very important addition to a growing Capped Bust Half Dimes collection during my peak years of collecting the series. In 1994 I passed it on to Glenn Peterson as part of a three-way deal with Russ Logan. Hopefully it would now pass on to a new owner who will come to appreciate it as much as I did while it remained in my personal collection for several years.

Brad Karoleff wrote about the latest issue of the John Reich Journal:

The latest issue, our 100th!, is back from the printer and being mailed in the next couple days.

If anyone does not receive theirs by the 20th please let me know at bkaroleff(at)yahoo.com and I will send out a replacement.

As you will see this is a 72-page issue.  The membership has stepped up to my request to make the 100thissue something special.   With that came extra expenses in printing, postage and envelopes.  You will find a request in with the journal for donations to help defray the expense of this double issue.  You will also find a dues notice for next year if you are an annual member.  Please forward your check to David as soon as possible to make his bookkeeping responsibilities easier.  You will also find the voting ballot for this years’ Jules Reiver Literary Award.  Please vote for up to 3 articles and return your ballot to David with your dues check.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming FUN convention in Orlando.  The JRCS meeting will feature a presentation by Chris Pilliod and David Finkelstein on the 1795 plug dollars.  I am especially looking forward to seeing what these two sleuths have uncovered this time!

Now, Dasher now Dancer now Prancer and Vixen.  On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen.  To the top of the aisle to the top of the case now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!  As the cherries are scattered before the wild hurricane fly when they meet with a buyer into the collection they go!  With a sleigh full of NEWPS and a wallet as empty as snow each of us run to catalog the coins anew.  And away the collectors all flew like the down of a thistle and I heard them say Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night!

2024 FUN Show JRCS Presentation: "A Fresh Look at the 1795 Silver Plug Dollar" by Christopher Pilliod and David Finkelstein.

Based on preliminary evidence, the long-held theories about why a silver plug was added to a number of 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollars may be wrong. A third potential reason under study will be shared with the club at FUN 2024.  Details TBA (check the FUN Show program).

As the holidays race towards us there are a few things going on in the world of JRCS. As I’m sure all you remember I called for a jumbo issue of the journal for our 100th issue. The membership responded very positively granting me with almost a full double issue. With that came extra work that is almost done. The issue will be out in early December.

It also came with additional un planned for circumstances. In my enthusiasm to put out a special issue I semi-planned for additional printing costs but did not think about needing different envelopes and the additional postage needed to mail them.  In discussion with our esteemed treasurer we determined that it would be prudent to raise $3000 to keep the treasury in a healthy condition.

So, here I am with hat in hand asking the membership to consider donating to the cause. I have already received commitments from a few members for a $100 donation. If you could see to sending something it would be highly appreciated. Checks should be made out to JRCS and please send a note with it letting Dave know it is a journal donation. Send them to JRCS, PO Box 3039 Centennial CO 80161.

We also have had two members who have downsized their numismatic library and donated their JRJ’s to the society. I can add recent numbers to make virtually complete sets. These are being offered for $500 plus UPS shipping to the first two respondents to bkaroleff(at)yahoo.com. All the early issues are present and represent a good value for anyone wanting a set of our journals.

Thanks to everyone who helps with a donation to our society. Any monies collected over the requested amount will be held in the treasury to offset miscellaneous future expenses.

Happy holidays and I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming FUN convention in January.

FINAL CALL:  DIME CENSUS

SUBMISSIONS DUE BY Friday, September, 15th

Michael Sullivan wrote:

To my fellow Early, Draped, and Bust Dime Collectors –

This is the FINAL CALL for SUBMISSIONS to the 2023 Dime Census.

My deadline for submissions is Friday, September 15th as I must assemble the content and write the supporting article that weekend ahead of extended business travel.   I cannot promise that any submission after Sept. 15th will be included in the 2023 census.

Thus far, I have 9 – Draped Bust and 15 – Capped Bust submissions to the census.   I am pleased to report that 100% of the contributors have provided detailed information (Grading Service, CAC, Raw, Details, etc.) to enable a color coding of the census.   This is a “next generation” trial approach to leverage our color printed journal.

Past Contributors who Contacted me, but Lacking Submission:  LM56, 950, 1039, 1057, and a few others.

Past Contributors I’ve Not Heard from Yet:  LM13, 48, 70, 114, 855, 1006, 1068, 1212, 1300, 1452, 1490, and 1521.   If you contact me with your email and JRCS number, I will send you a pre-populated template of information to update and correct.   This will make the process quite simple for everyone.

PLUS – There May be More of You Out There …….. Please email me and I will send you a template to complete for submission.

Alternatively, you can also submit information in a format convenient for you.   I look forward to hearing from you.

DIME CENSUS SUBMISSIONS DUE BY Friday, September, 15th

To my fellow Early, Draped, and Bust Dime Collectors –

We would like to include your dime collection information in the next census which will be included in the 100th anniversary issue of the JR Journal.    My deadline for submissions is Friday, September 15th as I must assemble the content and write the supporting article that weekend ahead of extended business travel.   I cannot promise that any submission after Sept. 15th will be included in the 2023 census.

As a trial for the next census and taking advantage of color printing digital technology employed by the John Reich Journal, you also have the opportunity to participate in a “next generation census” trial.  The six collections so far submitted include more detailed information to reflect grading service, CAC, Raw, and other key notes.   This is not a requirement for census submission, but an option as we advance with technology and grading services.

FOR PAST CENSUS CONTRIBUTORS STILL MISSING (LM13, LM56, LM66, 48, 70, 114, 519, 869, 855, 950, 1006, 1057, 1068, 1212, 1300, 1452, 1490, 1510, 1521):   If you contact me with your email and JRCS number, I will send you a pre-populated template of information to update and correct.   This will make the process quite simple for everyone.

FOR NEW CONTRIBUTORS:   Please email me and I will send you a template to complete for submission.

Wednesday August 9, 2023.  Put it down on your calendar.  Mail Bid Sale No. 56 will close at 6 PM EDT that night, day 2 of the Pittsburgh, PA World's Fair of Money.

There are 91 lots in the sale, something for everyone.  Grades range from Fine to MS 64+.  Tim Osborne's consignment leads off.  Lots 1 through 39 offer a dream set of Capped Bust Half-Dollars, 1807 though 1839.  Only the 1815 is missing.  All are graded by PCGS.  Most are AU 58, with a sprinkling of AU 55s.  Many have been off the market for a quarter century or more.  CAC stickers adorn over half the coins, including lots 1 and 39 -- AU 58 examples of an 1807 Large Stars and 1839-O.  Amazing!

Part 2 of the sale, lots 40 through 82, showcases an assortment of high grade, high rarity, beautifully toned and otherwise eye-catching bust halves, 1795 through 1836.  Again, eye appeal is the watchword.  I was fussy about accepting coins for this remarkable sale.

There are but 9 coins in Part 3, lots 83-91.  But, oh my!  Three carry R.6 rarity ratings.  Condition Census pieces include an 1811/10,  1812/1 Large 8, 1817 Punctuated Date and a stunning 1831 O.120.

The printed catalog is a work in progress.  Part 1 is complete.  I'm taking a one week break to enjoy sites in NYC.  I'll return July 1 to finish things off.  In the meantime preview a list and photos of every coin in the sale.  Just click on the Active Auction link, https://www.sheridanscoins.com/inc_active-mb.php.

Lot preview in Pittsburgh will be Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 7-9, at my bourse table.  Can't make it to the show?  Preview by overnight mail or Fed Ex will be available in July.  Send a list of the lots you wish to see. We will work something out.

On-line bidding will commence 7 to 10 days before the auction closes.

This example surfaced unattributed in 2005 and attracted spirited competition between Capped Bust Half Dime specialists when it appeared at that time. It was the fourth specimen of the die marriage to be identified, and has been off the market since. Recently, it was submitted to PCGS for encapsulation.

The second coin listed on the linked file is the 1832 LM-2, R-3. PCGS AU55 (81876910) and after studying it today there are some observations that can be added to the listing for the variety in the Half Dime Book.

This variety 32 LM2 has Reverse M in its’ 8th and last use, which is quite remarkable! Both examples I have, this coin and a VF raw coin, are rotated counterclockwise to about 11:20 or so, about 20 degrees. The die lapping below the RI in the scroll has caused the field to bulge in that area. The die crack going down from the right wing tip continues to the right side of the dentil to the right of the period. Also on some examples shown on the Coinfacts page for this variety that crack also extends up from the right wing tip into the feathers part of the way up the wing. Then like the crack noted through the tops of MER, there is also a crack through the tops of UN, seen on this coin and on some of the Coinfacts coins.

These notes have been added to my copy of the Half Dime book, so I thought I would share them with anyone else that may be interested. Any comments or information can be sent to my email address, 3cnickel(at)gmail.com
